AIKEN, SC – Mrs. Artlee Byrd Kalu, age 61 entered into eternal rest on Monday October 27, 2014 at CM Tucker Jr. Nursing Care Center Columbia, SC.

Memorial Services will be held 1:00pm Friday October 31, 2014 at Bell Grove Baptist Church Aiken, SC     Rev. Lester A. Smalls, Pastor-officiating.

She leaves to cherish her memories: three sons: Kalu Umachi, New Mexico, Ambrose Umachi, Texas, and Simeon Umachi; three sisters: Linda Pixley, Anita Byrd both of Aiken, SC, and Bertha Byrd, Augusta, GA;  four brothers Henry (Laverne) Byrd, Aiken, SC, Jasper (Georgia) Byrd, Johnston, SC, Charles (Carolyn) Byrd, North Augusta, SC, and Larry Byrd, Augusta, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

On February 23, 1888, the Aiken Institute was incorporated by an act of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina. The school opened its doors as a high school on September 17, 1888.
